Welcome to the Truemed family. We’re excited to partner with you to unlock HSA/FSA revenue for your business.
This guide introduces you to Truemed, explains how the platform works, and outlines what to expect as you get started.
Truemed enables qualified customers to use their HSA (Health Savings Account) and FSA (Flexible Spending Account) funds on eligible health and wellness products. We connect customers with licensed healthcare providers who evaluate eligibility and issue Letters of Medical Necessity (LMNs) to qualifying individuals.
Because HSA/FSA accounts use pre-tax dollars, your customers can save an average of 30% on eligible purchases. That means more buying power, less price sensitivity, and stronger retention.
HSA/FSA tax savings vary. Learn more at truemed.com/disclosures.
Truemed drives measurable results for merchants across categories:
At a high level, the Truemed experience follows this flow for your customers:
Each LMN covers the customer’s eligible purchases for a full year, so they only need to qualify once annually.
Truemed offers two integration paths. Please reach out to our partnerships team to determine the right one based on your storefront and business model.
Truemed supports various e-commerce platforms, including Shopify or WooCommerce, and we’ll directly integrate into your online checkout as a payment method. Customers select “Pay with Truemed” at checkout and can use their HSA/FSA card to pay.
Best for: Merchants with a supported e-commerce storefront who want a seamless checkout experience. For more information on our current e-commerce platforms, reach out to partnerships@truemed.com.
For merchants on any platform (including Shopify), Truemed provides a post-purchase qualification link. Customers complete a health intake form after checkout, and if eligible, receive an LMN they can use to submit for HSA/FSA reimbursement.
Best for: Subscription-based businesses, merchants on platforms that currently do not support a payment integration, or merchants who want to offer reimbursement alongside direct payment.
Many Shopify merchants use both integrations: the payment app for one-time purchases and the reimbursement flow for subscription orders.
Regardless of your integration type, your onboarding process includes:
What is an LMN? A Letter of Medical Necessity is a document from a licensed provider explaining why a product is medically necessary for a specific individual. It’s required to use HSA/FSA funds on products that aren’t automatically IRS-eligible.
Do customers need a doctor’s prescription? No. Truemed’s network of licensed providers handles the evaluation and LMN issuance through a brief online health intake form.
Which products are eligible? Eligibility is determined by Truemed’s compliance team based on IRS guidelines. During onboarding, we review your full product catalog and categorize each item. Your CSM will share the approved list with you.
Is Truemed available outside the US? Truemed is currently available for US-based customers with HSA or FSA accounts. Your business does not need to be US-based, but customers must have a US HSA/FSA to use Truemed.
How does Truemed make money?
Truemed’s fee structure depends on your integration type. Please reach out to our Partnerships team at partnerships@truemed.com for more information.
