Intro to Truemed on Shopify

Welcome to the Truemed family. This guide covers everything you need to know to get started with Truemed on Shopify.

What Is Truemed?

Truemed partners with merchants to enable qualified customers to use their HSA/FSA funds on eligible health and wellness products. We connect customers with licensed healthcare providers who evaluate eligibility and issue Letters of Medical Necessity (LMNs) to qualifying individuals.

Because HSA/FSA accounts use pre-tax dollars, your customers can save an average of 30% on eligible purchases. That means more buying power, less price sensitivity, and stronger retention.

HSA/FSA tax savings vary. Learn more at truemed.com/disclosures.

Why Merchants Partner with Truemed

Truemed drives measurable results for merchants across categories:

  • Higher AOV: Customers spend more when using pre-tax dollars
  • Improved conversion: HSA/FSA eligibility tips the scale for price-sensitive buyers
  • Stronger retention: Customers are less likely to churn when they’re saving on every purchase

How Truemed Works on Shopify

As a Shopify merchant, Truemed integrates directly into your checkout. Here’s the customer experience at a high level:

  1. Product page: Customers see an HSA/FSA eligibility widget on your product pages, letting them know they may qualify.
  2. Checkout: The customer selects “Truemed” as their payment method (they must check out as a guest, not via Shop Pay).
  3. Health intake: After placing the order, the customer completes a health survey (~2 minutes).
  4. Provider review: A licensed provider reviews the intake. If eligible, an LMN is issued within 24-48 hours.
  5. Payment processed: If the customer paid with their HSA/FSA card, they’re all set. If they used a regular card, they receive reimbursement instructions along with their LMN.

Before You Get Started

To keep things moving, complete these steps ahead of time:

1. Upload Your Product Catalog

Export your full product list from Shopify as a Plain CSV file (Settings > Products > Export > All Products). Make sure every product variant has a SKU assigned. Our team needs the complete list, including samples, gift cards, and branded merch, to accurately categorize eligibility.

Pre-approved merchants: Ensure all variants have GTINs (barcodes) assigned. Items without GTINs cannot be ingested by our system and will take 1–2 extra days.

2. Connect Your Bank Account

Complete the Stripe Express onboarding using the link provided in your onboarding plan. The green checkmark must appear for the payment app to function. See the Stripe Onboarding & Connection article for details.

3. Ensure Shopify Permissions

You’ll need account owner or admin permissions in Shopify to install and manage third-party payment apps.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an LMN? A Letter of Medical Necessity is a document from a licensed provider explaining why a product is medically necessary. It’s required to use HSA/FSA funds on products that aren’t automatically IRS-eligible.

Do customers need a doctor’s prescription? No. Truemed’s network of licensed providers handles the evaluation and LMN issuance.

Does the customer’s checkout email need to match their HSA/FSA account? No, but the customer’s name should match across the order, their Truemed health survey, and their HSA/FSA account.

Can customers use a regular credit card and get reimbursed later? Yes. Customers can select the Truemed payment option and enter a non-HSA/FSA card. They’ll receive reimbursement instructions along with their LMN.

How does Truemed handle sales tax? Sales tax is still charged and is eligible to be paid by HSA/FSA funds.
