How to Upload and Manage Your SKUs in the Truemed Portal

If a customer sees a new product marked as ineligible during checkout, don’t worry—this often means your latest product catalog hasn’t been reviewed yet.

To ensure your customers can pay with HSA/FSA funds at checkout, it’s essential to keep your product catalog up to date. With the latest update to your Truemed portal, managing eligibility is now faster and easier—no more back-and-forth emails.

Here’s everything you need to know to keep your product list optimized:


When to Upload SKUs

You should upload your full product list:

  • Once per quarter as a routine update

  • Any time you launch new products

  • If a customer reports seeing a product as ineligible during checkout

How to Export Your SKUs from Shopify

If you manage your products through Shopify, follow these steps to export your full product list:

  • Log into your Shopify dashboard

  • Click on the Products tab

  • In the upper right corner, click Export

  • Select:

    • "All Products"

    • "Plain CSV File"

  • Click Export Products

  • IMPORTANT: Ensure all products have a "variant SKU" assigned prior to export

How to Upload Your SKU List to Truemed

  1. Go to app.truemed.com and log in

  2. Click the Products tab in the navigation menu

  3. Upload your CSV file or add SKUs individually

  4. You’ll see each product appear in your SKU table with a status label

Both Owners and Staff can upload, view, and download SKU data.

Interpreting SKU Eligibility Status

Each SKU will show one of the following statuses:

  • Awaiting Review – Submitted, pending review by the Truemed team

  • Approved – Fully eligible for HSA/FSA with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)

  • Approved (without LMN) – Eligible and does not require an LMN

  • Partial Eligibility – Only part of the item qualifies (details will be in the LMN)

  • Ineligible – Not approved for HSA/FSA spending

Can I upload our products in a different format?

Please upload your product list according to the instructions above. If you are unable to do so for any reason, please reach out with the details of your situation and we will find a solution. We rely on a consistent product CSV format to quickly and accurately onboard you to our system.

Why do I need to send my full product list? Should I filter samples or branded merchandise out?

Our team needs your full product list to categorize eligible and ineligible items, including branded merchandise. Anything that appears on your receipts should be included - if your samples are included as a line item, they should be included in your products export.

When does Truemed need this?

Please send this prior to your onboarding call, and note any additional timing requests made by the Truemed onboarding team. Set reminders for your team to send us an updated SKU list quarterly, or whenever you add new products so we can update their eligibility.

Why is my new product showing as ineligible at checkout?

When a new product is added to your store, it must be reviewed by Truemed’s compliance team to verify eligibility under IRS guidelines. If we haven’t reviewed your updated product catalog yet, the product will default to ineligible until it's assessed.

How do I get a new product approved for HSA/FSA eligibility?

You’ll need to export your full product list from Shopify (following the steps outlined above) and send it to Truemed. Our compliance team will review the full catalog, categorize each item, and update your eligibility settings accordingly.

Can I manually tag new products as HSA/FSA eligible in Shopify?

No — product eligibility must be verified and assigned by Truemed’s compliance team. Merchant tagging alone does not enable HSA/FSA checkout.
