Why Might a Customer's HSA/FSA Card Be Declined at Checkout?

If a customer reports that their HSA or FSA card is being declined, it’s likely due to where the card is being entered during checkout.

Key Reason for Declines:

HSA/FSA cards will only authorize when processed through the Truemed payment application, not the standard Shopify payment fields.

What to Tell the Customer:

Ask the customer to:

  1. Select “Truemed – Pay with HSA/FSA” at checkout.

  2. Complete the short eligibility survey.

  3. Enter their HSA/FSA card details on the final Truemed screen.

If they attempt to enter the card in the regular Shopify payment field, the transaction will be declined by the card issuer because the purchase isn’t categorized properly for tax-free payment.
